The best double mattresses to invest in now
What are the best double mattresses to buy in 2026?
An antique single bed can be a romantic idea, but there’s much more luxury in waking up fully rested on a comfortable double mattress. We're firm believers that you should go for the largest bed a room can comfortably accommodate, especially in occasional guest spaces. A mattress that’s too small for your body or sleeping style can leave you cramped and unsupported, and makes it less likely you'll get the maximum benefit from your night's sleep. A mattress carefully selected according to your needs, on the other hand, means fewer disturbances—whether from a restless partner, a pet that insists on sprawling, or simply the inability to unfurl and stretch out to the maximum.
Perhaps your beloved double mattress is so past its prime it can't even be improved by smart bed linen or a plump mattress topper, or you can’t face another night of being jarred awake every time your partner reaches for a glass of water. Rapid innovation in the materials and techniques that go into mattresses, whether they're luxury brands like Vispring or bed-in-a-box innovators like and Simba, mean that these days, choosing a new mattress is increasingly seen as an investment—one that pays daily dividends in comfort, health, and overall well being. To help you find the best mattress in a double size for a peaceful night's sleep, we've sifted through to find the cream of the crop, thoroughly testing almost all of them out. To this day most of our in-house testers continue to use the mattress they tested, so you can rest easy knowing that they come highly recommended from real-life experience. Read on to find out more about our choices.
How do we test double mattresses at House & Garden? Our process
While in many cases we're recommending furniture and homeware here at House & Garden based on design and aesthetics, our mattress game is a bit different, and far more complex. Mattresses are more about engineering than they are looks, so we implemented a comprehensive testing process to make sure every mattress we recommend has been properly assessed against all of our criteria. We're looking at everything from firmness, pressure relief and temperature regulation, to value for money, design, structure, materials, production process, and ultimately how we slept.
This guide has been written and edited by Daphne Bugler, our in-house expert on all things sleep who's been writing about and testing mattresses for the past five years.

Finding a mattress that offers the perfect balance of support, space, and stability for two sleepers can be a challenge, but the Simba Hybrid Pro is built with couples in mind. At its core is an impressive dual layer of 4,800 patented titanium ‘Aerocoil’ springs, each acting to provide motion isolation and tailored edge to edge reinforcement. The result? Your sleep is uninterrupted, even when your bed mate tosses and turns. A layer of natural British wool not only adds breathable comfort but also helps regulate temperature and manage moisture. One year later, Arabella says that the motion isolation of the medium-firm mattress is ‘brilliant’, and she never gets disturbed by her partner coming home late or getting up early.
Pros: Sitting squarely in the middle of Simba’s five-tiered range, this mattress offers a smart balance between premium features and value—making it a standout choice if you’re upgrading your double mattress without going ultra-luxe.
Cons: It’s still an investment, and may stretch the budget if you're used to spending less on a mattress — but refurbished models offer a more affordable entry point into Simba’s signature comfort. Some say the mattress feels a little softer than medium-firm.

If you are a side sleeper, or share your bed with a side sleeper, you’ll likely already appreciate memory foam’s ability to contour to body curves. Nectar’s Premier Hybrid Mattress adaptive foam offers targeted relief to pressure points that can be tricky for side sleepers like shoulders, hips and legs. The good news is the medium-firm double mattress supports all body types, making this an ideal pick for co-sleeping. Our tester was impressed with the outstanding temperature regulation the mattress offers as well as the ‘cloud-like’ top layer which worked wonders for their back. The motion isolation likewise earned high praise, with Christabel, who tested this mattress, finding it perfect for those who share and still want undisturbed sleep.
Pros: Memory foam is not usually known for its cooling qualities, but our tester found Nectar’s Premier Hybrid Mattress to offer impressive circulation thanks to its three breathable top layers. Delivery was super speedy and efficient.
Cons: If you prefer a very soft mattress, this one isn't for you as our tester found it to be precisely medium firm - not too hard; not too soft. Also, bear in mind that this mattress can't be flipped.

A budget-friendly mattress doesn’t have to be banished to the spare room— in fact, our tester found that Dusk’s Hybrid Mattress is more than worthy of taking centre stage in your main bedroom. This medium-firm mattress is made up of four foam layers including cooling gel foam and a base layer of pocket springs. Virginia noted the soft, stretchy knit cover paired with a contemporary grey and white border with Dusk’s pink piping to be a nice touch to their bedroom.
Pros: While being deeply comfortable, this mattress also offers the support you would expect from a medium-firm mattress, making it ideal for various sleeping styles.
Cons: Our tester noted that the foam upper construction makes the mattress warmer than having springs beneath you, and whilst pleasant in the cooler months, this may be tricky if you sleep hot in the summer.

In our honest opinion, you don't find value like this Origin mattress every day. In fact, for a long while, we were tempted to gatekeep this mattress for ourselves it was that good, and that affordable. Origin arrived late to the game in the UK after all, coming in from Australia many years after other hybrid brands like Simba and Emma already had the market hooked, but thanks to its pricepoint and just how good the quality is, it's held its own.
Designed to feel “weightless”, think of this as a fusion of memory foam and pocket springs that just completely gets it right. It's soft on top, has good depth and firmness, and really relieves pressure while you sleep. We've tested it ourselves, and we've also tested it across different age groups, finding it held up just as well at 29 as it did for someone in their seventies. It's just an easy win on all accounts.
Pros: Very good value for money, comes with two free pillows in the current sale.
Cons: As with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, there is a bit of an off-gassing process that goes on here. Don't worry though, after a day you'll have forgotten this even happened.

With all of its claims about being a brand that focuses on pressure relief and taking care of your joints, we gave Rem-Fit's Hybrid 400 to a writer who's very open about how they've put their body “through the ringer”. Aches and pains were the norm, so the fact that she came away from this with an entirely new experience, waking up feeling relaxed, and as if her sleep had actually helped relieve pain, rather than enhance it, was a real testament to the Rem-Fit mattress range. All in all , it's just well designed, improving the quality of sleep, and adding a bit more softness than we often get from other similar hybrid mattresses.
Pros: The pressure relief and care for your joints is hard to come by, as well as the level of motion isolation if you're someone who's regularly woken up by a partner.
Cons: We wouldn't necessarily recommend this for front sleepers- we found it a bit less comfortable in this position.

I've tested a lot of mattresses in my time. I'm serious- a lot. But none have actually gotten me talking quite like Panda's. So soft that you'll find yourself wishing you didn't even need to put any bed sheets on it, it's just the perfect balance of firmness, feeling supportive, but by no means hard and plank-like. There's a bit of squish on top, and then you're met by a supportive underbody that really helps with pressure relief and keeps you comfortable. I also have to give it to Panda for being a bit more innovative with their materials - here using bamboo-infused memory foam to keep the foam from being too hot, regulating the temperature and adding extra breathability. It's even got orthopaedic grade support, which is hard to say no to.
Pros: Orthopaedic grade support, seven zoned, great motion isolation. It's just an endless list here of great features.
Cons: This mattress is quite heavy, which isn't uncommon among hybrids, but is worth noting if you need to carry it up multiple flights of stairs.

Experts suggest that good sleep brings with it a host of upsides - from keeping illness at bay to improved mood. A luxurious double Vispring Devonshire mattress elevates nourishing rest to an art form. Inside, hand-tufted British wool creates a sumptuously soft, breathable surface—perfect for one or two sleepers who prefer medium tension and pressure relief that doesn’t give way. Beneath the rich cotton surface, custom-made vanadium springs move independently to support co-sleepers without disruption, making the Devonshire an ideal choice for couples with different sleeping styles.
Pros: Made in Britain, available in a set with a divan bed. Available in three tension levels. If you’re on a budget, don’t let the listed price-tag put you off exploring this gorgeous double mattress - many retailers have sales that make this investment in sleep more attainable.
Cons: The mattress is particularly expensive. If you co-sleep and are looking for seriously tailored support, you will need to upgrade to the Vispring king size Devonshire mattress to enjoy the handy dual tension feature that lets each sleeper customise their half of the mattress.

Pros: Preservation of the planet runs deep with this mattress brand and is reflected in everything from the packaging to your ability to have your Naturalmat Superb Double Mattress repaired, ‘restuffed’, donated or recycled at the end of its life.
Cons: Unusually for the premium mattress market, the company only offers a 45-night sleep trial. The mattress may feel firmer than expected at first, but should become softer after a few weeks of use. The wool in the mattress may give off a natural smell which should subside after airing out.

Double mattress FAQs: Everything you need to know before you shop
What size is a double mattress?
A UK double is approximately 135cm wide by 190cm long, with the depth, or height of the mattress varying between brands but usually sitting between around 25-30cm. Some, however, are especially tall, such as the Feather & Black one on our list which measures 32cm high.
How much does a double mattress cost in the UK?
As with all sizes of mattress, the price range of UK doubles is extraordinarily variable. At the low end of the budget, IKEA offer a double mattress for just £99, but don't expect it to come with bells and whistles. At the polar opposite end of the spectrum, a super luxury Hästens mattress can set you back over £50,000. You needn't spend that much, however. We think the sweet spot for high quality vs price is between £500 and £2,000, depending on your budget. While £2,000 does sound a lot for a mattress, consider that it will be getting nightly use, and should last you at leat 5-7 years.
