Paris’s coolest new hotel has landed in a renovated Haussmannian
building in Pigalle, as envisioned by Juliette Gasparetto and Julie Parenti, who met at Festen before setting up on their own. Massé is the design duo’s very first project. They have made the most of every inch of the hotel, building into corners and oddly shaped walls, as well as under sloping ceilings, with creative, space-saving solutions. The result is 40 rooms ranging in size from a compact 13 square metres to 26 square metres, with a heavy use of wood from the wall panelling to the furniture – including custom-made beds with built-in nightstands and shelves. The design answers to current trends like the comeback of pine, which features generously, chequerboard textiles and Le Corbusier-style leather and steel armchairs.Rooms from €220. hotelmasse.com

A 10-year project has seen the former Palace of Justice, an imposing Neoclassical building in Amsterdam’s Canal District, transformed into a luxurious and culturally inspiring hotel. As soon as you walk in off the Prinsengracht, you are struck by the vast collection of contemporary art – from Maarten Baas’s ‘Grandmother’ and ‘Grandfather’ clocks to a functioning vending machine of Casper Braat pieces – showcased within elegant, sympathetic interiors by Piet Boon. Another Dutch design great, Piet Oudolf, was responsible for the naturalistic courtyard garden. Like the Asaya spa below and the 134 restful rooms and suites on the floors above (including five expansive ‘houses’), this provides a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city. For a livelier evening, head to the Advocatuur bar for playful cocktails, Indian small plates and a glimpse of the in-house distillery for Dutch spirit jenever, which has already proved a hit with the locals.

The Bolder3/10The Bolder, Norway
Along Norway’s 42-kilometre-long Lysefjord, The Bolder is a collection of six wood-clad contemporary lodges perched dramatically on stilts, which appear to be hovering over the rock face with nothing but the bellowing sea below. Its new villa, The Wave, is the most remarkable yet. At 285 square metres, it was designed by Jarmund/Vigsnæs Architects to be built into the forest and among the boulders unique to the landscape (the area’s best known nearby attraction is Preikestolen cliff). The Bolder is conveniently under an hour’s drive from Stavanger airport.

In the Swedish capital’s creative Södermalm district, a 19th-century building has been transformed into a stylish place to sleep, eat and retreat. With 32 rooms and two restaurants, it’s an intimate affair that, despite the modern makeover, carries the elegance of its past. A simple palette for the furnishings gives breathing space for the architectural features, including the original granite spiral staircase that connects the hotel’s salongen lounge with its fine-dining restaurant, Matsalen.

The Beach House5/10The Beach House, Greece
Antiparos is where affluent Greeks have long had summer retreats. Much of the recent hype around the island, which has been one of Greece’s best kept secrets, is thanks to the opening of The Rooster. Now, Athanasia Comninos has opened The Beach House on the opposite coast at Soros, giving an existing hotel a new lease of life with colourful interiors within the blue and white buildings. It’s a more casual counterpart to The Rooster, with just nine rooms on the beach.

Antigua’s flagship luxury resort has unveiled the first rooms reimagined as part of its renovation plan (to be completed by 2027). Around half its 87 suites now feature the new look created by House & Garden Top 100 Interior Designer Miminat Shodeinde, of Miminat Designs. Positioned along the bay and with views over the gardens and out to sea, they feature hand-carved furniture, textiles reflecting the Caribbean island’s landscape and local artwork.

Robert Rieger7/10Rote Wand, Austria
Eschewing the typical Alpine ski chalet aesthetic, Rote Wand in Zug is a refreshing addition to the Lech region. The chequerboard bedspreads, mid-century furniture and walls and ceilings clad in local sycamore, ash and spruce give it an understated feel, but its restaurant set within a 1780s schoolhouse, Chef’s Table, already has two Michelin stars. With only 62 rooms, the hotel has an après-ski buzz in the lounge area, without feeling overcrowded. This is one of the best skiing spots in Lech am Arlberg, while, in summer, the landscape thaws into an evergreen forest ideal for cycling, hiking, yoga and even golf.

There are some hotels you book for their location and then there are those that are the destination. This desert eco-lodge in Egypt’s Siwa oasis, built out of the earth and backed by palms, is a fine example
of the latter. From a distance, it is hard to spot against the terrain, appearing like the remaining shell of a once impressive fortress. Step inside and you’ll find surprises at every turn. A maze of 40 irregularly shaped rooms, hand-carved from the ground up, are decorated in rich colours and textiles from Siwa (piles of rugs are a signature look). When the blazing desert sun retreats at dusk, all are lit entirely by candlelight and the stars. There is no electricity in this remote corner of the world, forcing you to switch off and be fully present. Adrère Amellal is positioned between the White Mountain and Siwa Lake. This subterranean two-suite hotel, created from Oxford’s Victorian public loos, is filled with playful nods to the city. A tapestry above the bed by Pinton 1867 was inspired by examples hanging in the Ashmolean Museum, while Pierre Frey curtains by the shower pay tribute to the Oxford Playhouse theatre (both just across the road). And a 19th-century lithograph of yew trees in the Oxford Botanic Garden inspired the bathroom tiles.

Two hours from Zurich, this 12th-century Alpine castle unfolds as a symphony of gastronomy and design, with nine rooms complementing Andreas Caminada’s restaurant. To mark its 12th anniversary, Space Copenhagen has reimagined the interiors, preserving timber beams and staircases while layering oak, stone, wool, linen and bespoke or salvaged vintage pieces. Rooms in muted tones of grey and green mirror the landscape, while the spa, garden pool and sauna located in the cellar vaults invite a sense of stillness.
