Naturalmat ‘The Sumptuous’ mattress review: is it worth it?

In a word, yes. We might have found the best pocket spring mattress of 2026

It's a widely held opinion that Naturalmat is the Rolls Royce of the mattress world, so when I was offered the opportunity to review one of their products, I jumped at the chance.

To get things started, Naturalmat invited me to their showroom to test out their six different mattress models. Three of these are pocket sprung (the ‘Splendid’, the ‘Superb’ and the ‘Sumptuous’) and the other three are made entirely from natural fibres, giving a denser, firmer feel. These models are the ‘Cashmere’, the ‘Lambswool’ and the ‘Mohair’. I road tested all six options without knowing which was which and decided that the ‘Sumptuous’ was the one I liked best.

The Sumptuous Mattress

Pros and Cons
Pros
  • Organic materials
  • Made in the UK
  • Sublime comfort
Cons
  • Larger investment
  • 45 day trial is a shorter window than some other retailers

Once I had settled on this it was time to choose between the three tensions available: soft, medium and firm. At the time, my mattress was a hybrid model from Simba and, whilst it wasn't causing me any particular issues, I did notice a few months into sleeping on it that my go-to sleeping position had changed. Instead of sleeping on my side or back as I had done all my life prior, I was collapsing onto my front. Most mornings, I would wake up face down, with one leg pulled up towards my chest – notoriously the position that puts the most strain on your spine. After explaining this to the team at Naturalmat, they suggested I opt for a firmer mattress, which would be more supportive and enable me to stay in place throughout the night.

The Sumptuous Mattress

A Naturalmat mattress is an investment. There's no doubt about that – but to say my Naturalmat mattress has improved my life ten fold would be an understatement. To put it simply, my bed could not be more comfortable. Thanks to its blend of natural materials, a Naturalmat mattress is breathable and temperate no matter the season and, having now spent nearly a full year sleeping on it, I can confirm that it is sublime.

Inside the mattress is a layer of organic wool, which regulates your temperature to ensure you never overheat or get too cold. Under that layer, organic coir adds a level of support superior to memory foam or most modern inventions. Cashmere and horsehair make the finishing touches. There is no difficult-to-pronounce jargon here. The materials are natural, honest and hard-working, all handcrafted in a solar-powered Devon workshop.

How much does Naturalmat's ‘Sumptuous’ Mattress cost?

On the whole, because of their commitment to making mattresses by hand and using only the finest materials, a Naturalmat mattress is going to be on the higher end of the scale. Their most affordable double mattress starts at £1,430 and the mattress I chose, the ‘Sumptuous’, is on the more expensive end of the spectrum. A double in this size will set you back £2,520.
