When it comes to hybrid mattresses, there are hybrid mattresses, and then there are hybrid mattresses. Essentially, some are fine, decent if you will - they'll get the job done, be better than whatever £100 plank of wood was in your flat when you moved in, and give you a decent sleep. But then some are above and beyond what you'd even expect from a five-star hotel. These are the luxury mattresses worth paying upwards of a grand for. Our pick of the lot? The Simba Hybrid Ultra.
Now we know what you're thinking. This is an expensive mattress. And it is, that's true. But while it does come at a cost, unsurprisingly as it is Simba's most premium mattress, my time testing it out has made me see this as an investment in my health and wellness, rather than money we're just throwing away. Think of it as an addition to the money you'd spend easily on a gym membership or a spa day, except it actually impacts you every single day, rather than just on a select few.
And every penny is justified by Simba's impressive mattress design. We'll get into the details below, but we're talking here about eleven layers of mattress, with cooling technology, 34cm of depth, a plush feel, targeted support and even an easy-to-care-for and clean cover. That's a lot of jargon and far too many buzzwords for our liking, but it all is so carefully chosen and designed that it's well worth your time.
What led me to the Simba Hybrid Ultra in the first place?
Sometimes you feel it's simply time for a new mattress and sometimes, there's an inherent need to get something better. For me, it was the latter. As a side and back sleeper, I started to experience shooting pain in my hips when I was in bed on my side and it was hindering my sleep in a big way. So change it was, and this time, I wanted to see what something at the very top of the range from a dedicated mattress brand could offer. My previous mattress was from a furniture brand, rather than a mattress maker and the quality is worlds apart.
The Simba Hybrid Ultra mattress is the absolute top of the range that Simba offer, from their Hybrid line. The Hybrid line combines foam and spring technology, giving sleepers the best of both worlds when it comes to support. It's a whopping 35cm deep (meaning you need deep fitting sheets) because of the amount of layers packed in, which make it, supposedly, the most comfortable, supportive and tech-packed mattress they sell.

Simba Hybrid Ultra Mattress: is it worth shopping?
The short answer is yes. Firstly, the pain I had been experiencing night after night disappeared from night one with this mattress – it was quite remarkable. The mattress is soft and comforting when you first lie on it, but the layers of foam on springs mean that your spine is perfectly aligned at all times during the night, so it offers incredible support. The second game-changer for me was a big one; I can no longer feel my husband thrashing around next to me as he turns from side to side in the night. In fact, I no longer wake up when he nips out for a midnight wee. The mattress is designed to isolate movement in this way and it truly does, it's magic.
There are many reasons to love this mattress but the proof has been in the pudding for me: I am sleeping a lot better and waking up in the night a lot less.

Simba Hybrid Ultra Mattress: how does it compare one year later?
A year into my love affair with my Simba Hybrid Ultra mattress and I have to confess, my love of it has not waned in the slightest. It has been the best investment in my sleep and continues to be as supportive as it was brand new. The brand advises that you rotate it every few months to ensure you have continual support, and, having just done that, it feels brand new again. I'm now pregnant (a condition which throws all manners of discomfort and insomnia your way) and am finding I have no discomfort at all in bed this time around, given how good the mattress is. The other thing I really appreciate about it is its depth as I love a super high bed and I (a tall person) have to clamber in and out of bed, which feels oddly luxurious. It's held up brilliantly and I love it all the more.
